Line 1 An Act to incorporate the “Lane Seminary”~
Line 2 Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, that
Line 3 there shall be established
Line 4 in the vicinity of Cincinnati a
Line 5 Seminary of learning the primary object of which shall be
Line 6 to educate pious young men for the godful ministry under
Line 7 the style & title of the “Lane Seminary” –
Line 8 Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the fundamental
Line 9 principle of this Seminary shall be that every student be
Line 10 required to spend not less than three nor more than
Line 11 four hours each day on an average on agricultural or
Line 12 mechanical labour the avails of which shall be applied
Line 13 towards defraying the expenses of the institution including
Line 14 the board [?] of the students –
Line 15 Sec. 3. And be if further enacted, that Joshua S. Wilson,
Line 16 David Root, James Challen, William Schillinger, Robert Boal
Line 17 Jr, Jabes C. Tunis, John F. Keyes, Isaac G. Burnet, Ephraim Robbins
Line 18 James Warren, John H. Groesbeck, Robert Wallace, William W. Greene,
Line 19 John Thompson, Daniel Hayden, Benjamin Graves, Ludwell P. Gaines
Line 20 Jacob Lindley, Caleb Kemper, James Thompson, Daniel Wurtz
Line 21 Samuel January & Abraham A Halsey and their associates
Line 22 & successors known by the name of the “Ohio Board of
Line 23 Education” be they hereby are created & made a body
Line 24 Corporate &politic with perpetual succession who shall
Line 25 be known & distinguished by the name & style of the
Line 26 “Trustees of the Lane Seminary” by that name & style
Line 27 they & their associates & successors shall be a body in law
Line 28 capable of contracting & being contracted with, [suing] &
Line 29 being [sued], pleading & being impleaded, answering &

Line 1 being [answered] into defunding & being defunded [or] natural
Line 2 persons are or may be in all courts & places, & in all
Line 3 manner of suits, complaints, bills, causes, & matters what-
Line 4 so ever. They may have [unclear] a common seal. They shall
Line 5 be capable of purchasing, [receiving], holding, & enjoying,
Line 6 and granting, selling, & conveying any estate or property
Line 7 [real] or personal necessary for promoting the object of this
Line 8 act of incorporation, which object is above declared –
Line 9 Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, that the Trustees aforesaid
Line 10 & their associates & successors shall [learn] [from] to perpetuate
Line 11 this Board by filling their own vacancies [unclear] by
Line 12 death, resignation, [unclear] [unclear] or otherwise_ provided
Line 13 that the said Board shall always consist of not less
Line 14 than twenty three nor more than thirty five Trustees ~
Line 15 Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That there shall annually
Line 16 be elected by the said Board of Trustees from their own
Line 17 body a President, three Vice Presidents, a Recording Secretary
Line 18 a Corresponding Secretary a Treasurer & such other offices
Line 19 as the said Trustees their associates & successors may
Line 20 find it necessary from time to time to appoint ~
Line 21 Sec. 6. And be it further enacted, that the Board shall
Line 22 annually elect an Executive Committee consisting of thirteen
Line 23 Trustees, including the Officers, who shall conduct the
Line 24 affairs of the Board under its direction, seven of whom
Line 25 shall constitute a quorum ~
Line 26 Sec. 7. And be it further enacted, That the officers & members
Line 27 of the Executive Committee shall reside in the city of
Line 28 Cincinnati or its vicinity and shall be elected by ballot.

Line 1 Sec. 8. And be it further enacted, that a majority of the
Line 2 members of the Board & of the Executive Committee as well
Line 3 as all the instructors employed in the Theological department
Line 4 of the Seminary, shall members of the presbyterian church
Line 5 under the care of the General Assembly of the United
Line 6 States in good standing.
Line 7 Sec. 9. And be it further Enacted, That the [unclear] offices of the
Line 8 Board shall be Rev. Joshua S. Wilson President, Rev. Daniel
Line 9 Root, Rev. Jacob Lindley & Isaac G Burnet Esq. Vice Presidents.
Line 10 Abraham A Halsey Recording Secretary, James Warren Corresponding
Line 11 Secretary & John H Groesbeck Treasurer who together with
Line 12 John F. Keyes, Jabes C Tunis, William H Greene, Robert Boal Jr.
Line 13 Caleb Kemper, & William Schillinger shall compose [the] [unclear]
Line 14 Executive Committee to serve in their respective offices untill
Line 15 the annual meeting in the year 1829 _
Line 16 Sec. 10. And be it further enacted, That the Board of Trustees
Line 17 of said Seminary may grant & confer on any candidate
Line 18 in such form as they may direct all or any of the
Line 19 degrees that are usually conferred in any college or
Line 20 University within the United States ~
Line 21 Sec. 11. And be it further enacted, That the Board of
Line 22 Trustees may appoint such professors & tutors as they shall
Line 23 think necessary & remove them at their pleasure. They may
Line 24 from time to time make & enforce such rules regulations and
Line 25 bye-laws for the government & well being of the Seminary
Line 26 as may seem to them proper, provided they be consistent
Line 27 with the laws of the United States & of this state. They
Line 28 may [vest] in the faculty or professors such powers as
Line 29 they may think expedient for the [preservation]
Line 30 of good order & for enforcing obedience

Line 1 with rules regulations & bye laws of the
Line 2 institution_ they may hold their meetings at such
Line 3 times & places as they may designate & appoint_ The
Line 4 President may call special meetings at any time &
Line 5 such meetings shall always be called by the President or
Line 6 Recording Secretary at the written request of three of the
Line 7 Members of the Board of which meetings notice shall
Line 8 be given. And generally the Board shall have power to
Line 9 perform all such matters & things as they may judge
Line 10 necessary for the benefit of said institution.
Line 11 Sec. 12. And be it further enacted, That the Annual meeting
Line 12 of the Board of Trustees shall be [held] on the last
Line 13 Wednesday in October at 10 Oclock a.m. when the
Line 14 Officers & Executive Committee shall be chosen, the
Line 15 proceedings of the past year reported, the accounts
Line 16 audited & such other business transacted as may occur.
Line 17 This Act shall be subject to such
Line 18 alterations as the General Assembly may from time
Line 19 to time see proper to make _
